More and more people are equipping their home desks or small studios with a laser engraver to customize and create carvings on their accessories, ornaments, and daily items at any time. However, many friends are not familiar with how to use a laser engraver, so after purchasing it, they find themselves at a loss. 1. Structure and Working Principle of Diode Laser Engravers

Diode laser engravers mainly consist of laser emission module, moving control system, power supply unit and operating platform.

It works by converting electric energy into concentrated laser light through laser diodes. The precise laser beam is controlled to move freely on the platform, using high-temperature thermal energy to instantly carve, etch and mark patterns and texts on the surface of different materials. With stable light output and accurate positioning, it realizes fast and fine desktop engraving creation, featuring simple structure, easy operation and low cost, ideal for home DIY and small studio use.

2. Material Selection for Laser Engraving

Compared with other manual production methods, laser engravers are compatible with a wide range of materials! Common solid wood boards, bamboo objects, acrylic boards, and leather can all be used for daily engraving creation. However, it should be noted that the material should not be too dense or extremely flammable. This is a key point in material selection for laser engraving!

Materials such as heavy pure metal raw stones and flammable foam particles are not recommended! Materials with too high density will make the laser penetration insufficient, which is likely to result in very shallow carved lines that cannot show the pattern details at all, that is, the engraving effect is not up to standard; while overly fluffy and flammable materials will be instantly ignited by the high temperature of the laser, posing a risk of fire and machine damage!!! So if you find that the machine is running normally, but the pattern is always unclear, or the material is smoking or catching fire, it is best to turn off the power immediately, replace it with a suitable material, and then perform engraving. Safety is always the top priority!

3. Selection of Power Level

Different models of laser engravers have different rated powers, and different materials are suitable for different power levels. For the same carved pattern, the higher the power, the deeper the engraving depth! The change in power directly affects the effect of the carved product, which is also the most important point to pay attention to when selecting the power level.

That's why we often can't get the ideal work when engraving with the default power, because the different materials lead to differences in engraving effects! Therefore, we can directly match the corresponding standard power level according to the thickness of the material, starting with the default middle level, which can ensure a high fault tolerance rate when we engrave. The power level suitable for the model and the current material is the most appropriate engraving parameter at the moment. It is also recommended that you record the adapted power value for easy quick adjustment of the engraving plan in the future~

4. Selection of Engraving Speed

The running speed of laser engraving is also a concern for everyone. The rationality of the speed selection directly determines the delicacy of the carved product. You can look at the control panel of the engraver, which is equipped with an exclusive speed adjustment slider and value gear to control the movement speed of the laser head.

Its function is to avoid large-area burning and blackening caused by too slow speed or material intolerance to high temperature. If the speed is adjusted too slow, the laser head will stay in the same position for a long time, and the high temperature will continuously burn the material, which not only damages the appearance but also easily damages the material. Therefore, it is recommended to control the engraving speed within the middle range recommended by the model. Similarly, to facilitate the adjustment of the engraving effect later, it is also recommended that you record and save the appropriate speed value.

5. Operation of the Laser Engraver

Prepare the materials needed for engraving: the material to be engraved, computer/mobile phone drawing files, the laser engraver, and a flat and stable placement table. This is the basic preparation for the operation of the laser engraver.

  1. Place the Machine and Fix the Material        

    First, place the engraver on a flat table and adjust the machine to a horizontal position. Stable placement can avoid machine shaking during engraving and make the pattern engraving more regular and accurate! If the material is small and irregular, be sure to fix it firmly with a fixture to prevent the material from sliding during engraving, which will lead to pattern misalignment.

       
  2. Import Engraving Drawings and Locate        

    Select the desired pattern and text in the computer or special APP, adjust the drawing size and typesetting to ensure that the pattern size is suitable for the material, and then synchronously transmit the file to the engraver's control system. It should be noted that after importing the drawing, it is best to preview and locate it to confirm that the pattern falls in the center of the material to avoid offset and material waste. After positioning, lock the drawing size and do not drag it randomly to avoid affecting the engraving accuracy.

       
  3. Adjust Power and Engraving Speed        

    It should be noted in this step that when engraving an unfamiliar material for the first time, priority should be given to the middle power and middle speed, and do not directly pull the parameters to the maximum to avoid burning the material at one time. You can first test engrave a small section on the edge of the material, confirm the effect, and then perform formal engraving to reduce the trial and error cost.

      
  4. Start the Machine and Begin Engraving        

    There is not much to say about this. After confirming that all settings are correct, press the start button to begin engraving. Do not touch the laser head and material with your hands during engraving to avoid being scalded by high temperature, and do not cut off the power randomly to prevent machine failure.

       
  5. Observe the Status and Make Timely Adjustments        

    When we see that the laser head is moving and drawing normally, if we find slight burning and blackening on the edge, it means that the laser stays for too long. At this time, we can appropriately increase the engraving speed. Otherwise, the low speed will make the laser continuously accumulate heat and burn the surface layer of the material, which not only makes the lines blurred but also greatly reduces the overall appearance of the finished product. Therefore, it is most appropriate to adjust the speed in time when burning edges are found in the early stage of engraving. If the lines are too shallow, you can appropriately increase the power a little. Flexible adjustment can achieve better results.

       
  6.  Take Out the Finished Product and Do Simple Finishing        

    After the laser engraver stops running completely and the laser cools down, we can take out the carved work and simply clean the burrs! You can use a soft brush to gently brush off the carved debris on the surface. If there are slight burn marks, you can also gently polish them with fine sandpaper to make the finished product smoother.

    To prevent dust and debris from affecting accuracy, you can place a small vacuum cleaner near the laser head to suck up debris in real time during engraving; after each use, clean the laser head and operating platform with a soft brush to avoid dust accumulation on the laser lens, which may weaken the laser power and affect positioning.

    2. Can I use a diode laser engraver to engrave on glass?

    Ordinary diode laser engravers cannot directly engrave on glass, as glass is transparent and has low absorption of laser energy, resulting in almost no engraving effect. If you want to engrave on glass, you need to use a special glass engraving spray (coating the glass surface to enhance laser absorption) or choose a high-power diode laser engraver designed for glass.

    3. Why does my diode laser engraver stop working suddenly during operation?

    Sudden shutdown during operation is usually caused by three reasons: insufficient power supply (check if the power cord is loose or the socket is faulty), overheating protection (the machine will automatically shut down if it overheats; turn it off and let it cool for 10-15 minutes before restarting), or software connection failure (reconnect the computer/mobile phone to the engraver and retransmit the drawing file).
